Rule number one, and most important, is not to get into an arguement with them. Causing them to become agittated only causes the defence reflex to come into play. So long as they are talking about things calmly, you are winning, but if they get angry terminate the discussion till the next time the subject comes up. Over a long period of time a lot of alternate ideas can be planted.Then its just a matter of letting the seeds sprout, in their own time. Its hard to leave off a discussion of something you desperately want to get across, but getting into heated or emotional debate is counterproductive.

How do you explain to a jw...

you can explain what you believe and why, but if they're deeply in they can just pass it off as 'needing faith' etc.
so without going into deep deep issues(i prefer the keep it simple, sweetie approach), what points do you use to make jws think about things?

Well the only famous person Ive ever met was Dr Jim Cairns ( of Gough Whitlam fame) I sat at a table for six with him all evening at a wedding I attended. Very intelligent and thoughtful man.

Gary. ( and anyone interested) Heres a passage from a book called “End Time prophecy” by Norman Robertson (1989), a Biblical expositor, page 177, the author is interpreting Ezekiel 38, he begins:
QUOTE:… “ Ezekiel 38 v 1-3 ‘Now the word of the Lord came to me saying, Son of man, set your face against Gog (Russian Premier Gorbachev) of the land of Magog (USSR), the prince of Rosh (Gorbachev, Russias leader) Meschek (modern day Moscow) and Tubal (Modern city of Tobolsk) and prophecy against him, and say, ‘Thus says the Lord God, Behold I am against you Oh Gog…”
On page 187 Robertson explains the interpretation of Ezekiel 38 v 5-7:
QUOTE:… “ Persia (Iran, Iraq Afghanistan) Ethiopia and Libya are all with them, All of them with shield and helmet. Gomer (East Germany, Poland, Hungary and Czechoslovakia) and all its troops, the house of Togarmah ( Bulgaria, Rumania and Turkey) ..many peoples are with you”…
The Italicized insertions into scripture are His, not mine. The author engages in this practise of inserting his own understanding and interpretation into scripture passages numerous times thru the course of his book. Is he claiming Gods authority for his interpretation or not? What do you think?
As well, on page 183 Robertson writes:
QUOTE:… “ Ezekiel 38 predicts that Russia will come against Israel for food.”
And:
QUOTE:… “ From a study of Ezekiel 38 and 39 we see that it is stated, 17 times, that Russia and her allies will march against the tiny nation of Israel”…
All within the time frame established, of course, by Robertsons interpretation of Biblical chronology.
Is he a “false prophet” in view of the fact that the nations mentioned, once Russian satellites, are now no longer allied with the Communist block since 1990 and the predicted “communist invasion” of Israel is now an increasingly unlikely improbability?
Anyway, It just goes to show the dubs aren’t the only ones interpreting Bible chronology. Id be interested in your opinions on this matter.

Ellen G White used that line of arguement first, from what Ive read, back in the 1880s. The dubs in brooklyn must have read her books and thought it a good line of thinking to excuse false prophecy. Lots of other lines of arguement are recurring also, "sifting the church" to weed out "fair weather christians" thru a prophecy test springing to mind. I dont recall the dubs focusing on that one overmuch recently.

Well of coursde the dubs pride themselves on telling everyone they are not cult like. They focus upon the cultic aspect of being led by a charismatic single leader and tell us they have no charismatic leader and so cannot be a cult. They ignore the other cultic aspects such as sealed system, information control etc, and focus upon this one aspect, the charismatic leader. They probably dont remember, themselves that a charismatic leader they did once have. As other former cults, now sects, also had. So that arguement of theirs is invalid.
Regarding the case at point. Certainly they have never categorically stated " God says", but the fact is neither has any other cult Ive been involved in. The tendancy is to claim the authority of Christ ( jesus tells us), the angelic forces, St Paul ( the Apostle reveals) etc. This they certainly have done.
I think I posted a thread about claims to spiritual authority within cults just the other week.

Your comments are pretty much spot on as to my intents and thinking. But then youre a thinking man. Why Simon would have any axe to grind with you is beyond me, though it is apparent he does not like your posting. It is almost as though he wishes nothing but thoughtless fluff on his board. Perhaps he is psychologhically exhausted from his efforts here.The regulation of opinion, the tendancy towards the mainstream here, is quite staggering in my mind. I honestly would have thought ex dubs would rail against all forms of regulation of opinion, questioning everything and condemning propaganda in all forms. But it is not the case. Most of the people here havent even read their dub history, except for cut and paste quotes on web boards. An amazing consideration, from my perspective.
Anyway, to be truthfull, if I saw condemantion of myself from numerous posters whose opinion I thought truly valuable, such as yourself, I would honestly reassess my position. But I dont see it. Well, except for Ona of course. Onas okay.

I see no point in doing this with people who are determined to misinterprete me. Ergo Simon in this instance.
Its true that my apology was not from the heart and was a formality. But that only demonstrates that I was not (in my own mind ) advocating " date rape".Its hard to be sincere if you think your innocent. To accuse me of "date rape" is absurd in my eyes because I dont view that rape is involved if they turn down the light and remove their own pants. Lol.
As for such people as Little Witch. Francois. X Warrior. Scully and Teen Yuck who have all had plenty to say in this discussion, You will have to forgive me if I hold their opinions in scant regard. Numerous of them have stated in the threads involved that they dont like me and never have. So far as I am concerned they are simply people who have a personal axe to grind with me trying to make mileage against me.So I see no point in defending my views, or explaining my thinking to people whose opinions are set.
I will however apologize to one here, and that is stinky. I apologize Bridgette, sincerely, for saying that "I refused to cyber you and only rated your picture an 8". In fact, I rated it a 9 and there was no suggestion of cybering on your part. There were a lot of people piling on me and I felt the compulsion to take my anger out on someone and I sought to hurt you.
